Behind every painting is a story and Thom is the storyteller. His family owned a paint store that included a section with art supplies and books about drawing and painting architecture, landscapes, and figures. He spent many hours in that section of the store. While serving in Europe with the U.S. Army, he traveled and continued sketching and painting with wash & ink. For the past 30 years he worked in professional development primarily with architects and other design industry professionals - occasionally drawing. Working at the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC, Thom had the good fortunate to travel extensively, visiting architectural sites in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe and several Pacific Rim countries. The cultures, architecture and arts of these locations continue to influence his selection of subjects, compositions and colors. In 2011 Thom began taking classes and workshops at the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia. In addition, he supplements the more formal studies with self-study and social media options.
Thom is interested in a variety of subjects, drawn to landscapes, seascapes and figure study. His paintings and drawings express his feelings and connections with people and places. He enjoys trying new approaches to art, but absolutely loves watercolor and inks. His subjects are from a personal, expressive point of view, seeking to find and tell a personal story with each painting and drawing.
