Freedom Pear by Chris Krupinski
Watercolor 30 x 22

This quilt, like most quilts tells a story. Numerous elements in the quilt are symbolic of the slave experience and the road out of slavery. To begin, the fabric chosen to construct the quilt is homespun, a coarsely woven cotton material that slaves wore on a daily basis. One difference being that the homespun for their clothes would not have been dyed. Rather, the color would have been that of cotton as it grew in the fields. To symbolize the routes taken by escaping slaves, the quilt design consists of four-patch squares set on point and sewn into multiple strips These four-patch blocks are made from homespun and represent the many stations and brave conductors along the routes. The strips are set in a field of navy blue. The color represents the time between sunset and sunrise when the escapees would travel under the cover of darkness. The star at the top of each pieced strip represents the North Star which provided direction and light on the path to freedom.

Biography
Art is a key element in Chris Krupinski's life. She has been drawing and painting all of her life, but once she discovered watercolors she has had a passion for the medium ever since.

Chris's art career has achieved a tremendous following on the national and international level as a brilliant watercolorist. Well credentialed, her paintings continually draw rave reviews for her fine art work, winning more than 100 national awards and honors. Chris is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and earned Dolphin Fellow in 2015. She is also a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor Honor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society Master, and Allied Artists to name a few. She has been published in major watercolor publications and has been a featured artist in numerous leading national art magazines. Chris had a painting on the cover and a feature article in the October 2014 issue of The Artist's Magazine. Her work has been in international exhibitions in China, Greece, Italy, and Turkey. Her watercolors are hung in several corporate collections and are cherished additions to the finest of private collections.

Chris's watercolors are created with special consideration to detail. By focusing much of her attention to the smallest detail, the viewer is drawn into the intricacies of her work. Dynamic light and shadow treatments are prominent statements in her paintings. The play of lights and darks develop effective abstract design. Emphasizing these two elements has enabled her to create powerfully expressive still lifes and bold compositions.
