Underpainting of Rome- (IN PROGRESS) by Michelle Provitola
Oil 12 x 12

Underpainting of a Representational painting from ROME. It is a composite of multiple photo's layered to get this effect. The is the Grisaille underpainting (it's pronounced 'griz-EYE'). Let me define what Grisaille means. This is done when an artist uses a limited palette related to one color like Raw umber, to create a painting's first layer. This technique helps to develops the image by building up shadows, highlights and details to produce the desired contrast and composition. The focus these days has been to take what I know from my decorative painting days, blending those techniques with the use of oils. In the end I am creating something that is authentically me.
