It Happened Like This... by Carolyn Huff-Winters
Charcoal 14" x 11"

It Happened Like This... As I was working on this painting, there was one tree that stood out from the others. It seemed that she (yes, she) had lived many years and had been through many things. She had survived freezing winters and the droughts of hot summer days. Beaten by rain and hail, struck by lightning, lashed by strong winds, her bark and trunk baring the scars of those experiences. If she could talk, I imagine she would have so many stories to tell ... each beginning with It happened like this... This painting arrives double matted in a contemporary black frame ready to hang.

Biography
I'm a Canadian artist working with acrylics, powered charcoal, and mixed media.  As a young girl, I often drew horses, and when I was 13, I produced a self portrait in pencil, but I never thought of myself as a future artist.  I finished high school, went on to university, got married, had a family, and worked full time.  Art was history, although every now and then, I would pull out an old sketch book and draw.

I've been painting since 2010.  At that time, I was temporarily off work (oncology nurse) while going through chemotherapy, and a friend asked me to take an art course with her in a private home.  She felt I had too much time on my hands.  I don't feel I learned a lot in that class, but it stimulated my creative self, and painting became a focus for my energy.  I couldn't paint often enough, and even now, I spend time every day in my studio.

I have taken numerous college level courses, attended workshops and sought private lessons, but for the most part, I have learned from other artists.  Much of my 'education' is the direct result of examining their works, studying what they have done, trying to determine how they achieved a particular effect or texture, or the way in which they used color overtly or subtly for shading and light.  I feel very fortunate to have these 'educators' at my finger tips via the internet, books and fellow artists and to be continuously learning from them.
