I'm a Canadian artist working with acrylics, powered charcoal, and mixed media. As a young girl, I often drew horses, and when I was 13, I produced a self portrait in pencil, but I never thought of myself as a future artist. I finished high school, went on to university, got married, had a family, and worked full time. Art was history, although every now and then, I would pull out an old sketch book and draw.
I've been painting since 2010. At that time, I was temporarily off work (oncology nurse) while going through chemotherapy, and a friend asked me to take an art course with her in a private home. She felt I had too much time on my hands. I don't feel I learned a lot in that class, but it stimulated my creative self, and painting became a focus for my energy. I couldn't paint often enough, and even now, I spend time every day in my studio.
I have taken numerous college level courses, attended workshops and sought private lessons, but for the most part, I have learned from other artists. Much of my 'education' is the direct result of examining their works, studying what they have done, trying to determine how they achieved a particular effect or texture, or the way in which they used color overtly or subtly for shading and light. I feel very fortunate to have these 'educators' at my finger tips via the internet, books and fellow artists and to be continuously learning from them.
