"Man Seeking Fish" by Leisa Luis-Grill
Oil 9 x 12

This is a plein air piece one in Eau Claire, WI, during a painting event. I loved the way the light looked off the subject's crisp white shirt and the rocks he was standing on. It was a Quick Paint so we had approximately 2 hours.

Biography

I was born in Denver, Colorado in 1957. I have wanted to draw ever since I could pick up a pencil.
In childhood I graduated from crayons to watercolor to pastel, and eventually began doing small portraits for friends and family. In high school I devoted many hours to the Theatre, where I honed my skills in scenic art and costume design when I wasn’t onstage. It shaped the rest of my life.
In 1977 I studied Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where I concentrated on fashion drawing, draping. and developed a lifelong addiction to fabric. My choices eventually led me back to the Theatre and to Colorado. I moved to Minneapolis in 1984 where a playwright friend reported that a lot was happening for devoted drama geeks. I planned to get a resume under my belt and then maybe go back to the Big Apple. Turns out I liked it so much here, I stayed put.
I do not have a formal Art degree. I tend to learn by doing and by taking advantage of workshops and classes that interest me, which I consider just as valid. I have learned considerably by taking local classes here in Minnesota with the Madeline Island School of the Arts and at various galleries. I have studied at The Massachusetts College of Art and Design, The Easton Art school, (Easton, MD) where I workshopped with Camille Przewodek. Camille re-ignited a long-standing desire to explore color and light in the manner of the Cape Cod School and the early impressionists that I admire.
I currently study with Kami Mendlik of the St. Croix River School of Art. Kami is a masterful artist and teacher. She guides the artistic journey of her studentswith a clarity, beauty and spirit that I find to be a [...]
