Born in Haverhill Massachusetts, Joseph Rampulla spent his childhood sketching and painting. Largely self-taught, he took several classes at Montserrat Academy at age 18, laying the foundation for his style; integrating realism with expressionist and abstract concepts. He frequently draws on those lessons to inform his current paintings. He has studied in Italy with Bill Griffiths and with David Curtis in Gloucester.
His recent work is influenced by his home of New England, his prior art training and his experiences both as a nurse practitioner and a cancer survivor. He paints directly alla prima and whenever almost entirely Plein Aire. Some of Joseph's favorite topics to paint include local landscapes, cityscapes; everyday scenes and objects. Joseph strives to find inherent rhythm and feeling in his work. Whether depicting a field, a beach or a city, his paintings express care for his subject matter, an at times, humor.
