Born in Dallas, Texas, Pamela Gatens comes from an artistic family. Her father was a professional photographer and mother an expert seamstress. Pamela began working in graphic arts while in high school, and enjoyed graphic design and typography as a career until moving to West Virginia in 2002. Pamela joined Greenbrier Artists at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg in 2004 and began working in acrylic and watercolor. Pamela is now a prolific painter and entertaining teacher. She is also a member of The American Impressionist Society and a Signature Member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society. She is represented by The Greenbrier Hotel & Resort, online with Carleton Varney, Tamarack in Beckley, WV, and The Art Store in Charleston, WV. Her line of cat and floral cards have been best sellers for years at Tamarack. Pamela currently lives in Hillsboro, WV with her husband Pat, and cats Pokey and Mack.
Pamela paints nearly every day, and when not painting, is gazing, studying or dreaming about it. She feels that painting on canvas is all about color, freedom and problem solving - thoroughly enjoying the abstract structure of all paintings. To her, the beginning structure is the most exciting part. No other activity gives the fulfillment that painting does for her. She focuses on brushwork and layering in order to express her love of color. She finds inspiration in everything from beautiful flowers to a smiling cat. Her passion for art is so great that she feels nothing makes her happier than painting. “My colorful paintings come from the true happiness I feel in front of the easel,” she explains.
