Dark Sunset by Nancy Bass
Oil 6 x 8

In this series of intimate seascapes, I am interested in capturing the vastness and beauty of the sunset. It is remarkable how each second of observing the seascape presents a new and unique scene never to be repeated in nature.

Quiet Morning by Nancy Bass
Oil 5 x 7

Everyday on the beach brings surprise and delight. This quiet morning the beach had unusual shapes of seashells on the sand.

Wading In by Nancy Bass
Oil 8 x 8

Walking on the beach I came upon a group of Ibis with their unusual long beaks. I don't usually see these birds at the beach so it was exciting and the light was strong. I always love white animals against the colors of the water.

Beach Beauties by Nancy Bass
Oil 5 x 7

hen I was walking on the beach I saw three young women having a great time in the ocean. The light was intriguing and I thought I would give this subject a try. It is always challenging to paint figures but in truth it is just painting shapes. I enjoyed painting the color and temperature changes in the light and shadows on the figures.

Sunset at the Beach #2 by Nancy Bass
Oil 5 x 7

I find it calming to paint these intimate portraits of the ocean. This sunset had the most subtle color shifts from the white/yellow of the setting sun to the warmer pinks, yellows, greens, and blues.

Biography

My life long love of animals nurtured my artist soul for many years. But a cow – somehow – changed my entire point of view. I was delighted to discover that I was not the only one who was drawn to these gentle spirits.

My collector’s testimonials are openly rejoicing as they describe their sense of peacefulness whenever they view my paintings in their homes. They feel a certain connection, maybe brought on by childhood memories.

Now, I must admit that this is not a normal herd of cows.  Each cow on my farm was chosen for its distinct personalities, characteristics, and other special qualities.

Collectively, these cows are central to my core artistic message. I find such calmness and feel a return to simpler times in these innocent faces. That is what I know I am sharing and it gives me great joy.

For over thirty five years we lived on Anchorage farm in Southern Albemarle county just a ten minute drive from the University of Virginia.  We raised our herd of Simmental, Hereford, Angus, and Charolais cows who ate the grass and served as beautiful models for my paintings.  I now spend my winters on the West coast of Florida and my summers in the mountains of the Asheville area andI continue to paint my herd of cows and  other creatures that inspire my paintings.

I continue to be inspired by the beauty of the ocean, the farm, or the mountains and always by cows , bears, dogs, birds, and horses and many other creatures that enchant me.
