Out to Pasture by Nancy Bass
Oil 11 x 14

In this painting of a white Charolais calf at the barn on our farm, I wanted to capture the light and shadows that were beautiful along with the sense of the relationships that were felt between the cows. They have their own social order and function as a group or herd. I am using painting knives in this work to create interesting texture and edges.

Contemporary Chicken by Nancy Bass
Oil 10" x 10"

Chickens are not easy to paint. These prehistoric creatures have challenging faces with unexpected shapes and lines. In this painting I wanted to go beyond capturing a likeness. I wanted to capture the life and beauty of the chicken using color, texture, and interesting edges. Using cold wax mixed into my paint helped me achieve the interesting finish and look I was after in this work.

This little pug was painted as a commissioned piece. I enjoy painting intimate portraits of dogs showing their individual personalities.

Miss Sally and the Girls by Nancy Bass
Oil 8 x 10

All the cows on our farm were favorites for their unique markings and personalities. Miss Sally was a very special cow and was one of my most painted bovines. She had the classic looks of a perfect cow. In this study I wanted the viewer to engage with Miss Sally but also to play with the layering of the cows and colors in an interesting composition.

Biography

My life long love of animals nurtured my artist soul for many years. But a cow – somehow – changed my entire point of view. I was delighted to discover that I was not the only one who was drawn to these gentle spirits.

My collector’s testimonials are openly rejoicing as they describe their sense of peacefulness whenever they view my paintings in their homes. They feel a certain connection, maybe brought on by childhood memories.

Now, I must admit that this is not a normal herd of cows.  Each cow on my farm was chosen for its distinct personalities, characteristics, and other special qualities.

Collectively, these cows are central to my core artistic message. I find such calmness and feel a return to simpler times in these innocent faces. That is what I know I am sharing and it gives me great joy.

For over thirty five years we lived on Anchorage farm in Southern Albemarle county just a ten minute drive from the University of Virginia.  We raised our herd of Simmental, Hereford, Angus, and Charolais cows who ate the grass and served as beautiful models for my paintings.  I now spend my winters on the West coast of Florida and my summers in the mountains of the Asheville area andI continue to paint my herd of cows and  other creatures that inspire my paintings.

I continue to be inspired by the beauty of the ocean, the farm, or the mountains and always by cows , bears, dogs, birds, and horses and many other creatures that enchant me.
