At the Museum( after Hopper) by Nancy Bass
Oil 30” x 40”

Edward Hopper's paintings are quintessentially American and capture a sense of loneliness that is part of contemporary life. His work has a beauty and a story that the viewer becomes involved in.

Sunflower Bear by Nancy Bass
Oil 10" x 10"

The sunflowers have been blooming in a large field near my home. I always think of Van Gogh when I see sunflowers. There is something interesting in combining a large black bear against all the color of the flowers and the sky and how each enhances the other in strength.

Night Watch by Nancy Bass
Oil 10 x 10

Black bears are very numerous here in the mountains around Asheville, North Carolina. As the air is getting clear with the early fall changes of season, I am inspired to paint a series of portraits of these gorgeous creatures. I love the challenge of painting variations of cool and warm black.

Ella by Nancy Bass
Oil 6 x 6

In this new painting in my Herd Series I used various techniques to build surface textures. Emma is a beautiful white Charolais cow from my herd on the farm.

Miss Sally by Nancy Bass
Oil 6 x 6

For several years I have been painting a series of portraits of the herd of cows we raised on our farm. In this latest painting of Miss Sally, I have made texture an important part of the experience. I am combining traditional realism with the textures of contemporary painters I admire such as Lucian Freud.

Biography

My life long love of animals nurtured my artist soul for many years. But a cow – somehow – changed my entire point of view. I was delighted to discover that I was not the only one who was drawn to these gentle spirits.

My collector’s testimonials are openly rejoicing as they describe their sense of peacefulness whenever they view my paintings in their homes. They feel a certain connection, maybe brought on by childhood memories.

Now, I must admit that this is not a normal herd of cows.  Each cow on my farm was chosen for its distinct personalities, characteristics, and other special qualities.

Collectively, these cows are central to my core artistic message. I find such calmness and feel a return to simpler times in these innocent faces. That is what I know I am sharing and it gives me great joy.

For over thirty five years we lived on Anchorage farm in Southern Albemarle county just a ten minute drive from the University of Virginia.  We raised our herd of Simmental, Hereford, Angus, and Charolais cows who ate the grass and served as beautiful models for my paintings.  I now spend my winters on the West coast of Florida and my summers in the mountains of the Asheville area andI continue to paint my herd of cows and  other creatures that inspire my paintings.

I continue to be inspired by the beauty of the ocean, the farm, or the mountains and always by cows , bears, dogs, birds, and horses and many other creatures that enchant me.
