No Longer Needed by Robert Matheson
Oil 14 x 18

Found this old concrete block barn several years ago, Long past being used it had started to slide away, The roof was a mess and pigeons were flying in to the barn, I painted it the way it was but was not happy with the roof, I repainted it and think it worked.

High Spot Along The Creek 20 x 16 by Robert Matheson
Oil 20 x 16

Have been painting along Minnehaha Creek for a few months now. It is close to home and has a lot of nice spots to paint including this one. I liked the height and the long view, makes you want to pause and take it all in as you walk the bank.

River Birch On Minnehaha Creek by Robert Matheson
Oil 16 x 20

Painted down the block and up the creek a bit towards Upton. I walk my dogs along the creek several times a week and thought this slice of it was worth painting. The water is very high right now and could flood in the next week so I am glad I did paint before this is underwater.

View from Arden Park looking North off the bridge. This is all going to change next year as the creek gets rerouted so glad I have an image of before it happened.

Three Old Friends by Robert Matheson
Oil 18 x 24

Painted this with good friends Tom McGregor and Bob Bonawitz. It was a warm sunny day and we enjoyed the scene and each others company. I thought the title was fitting. We have been painting together for years.

Softly Comes The Morning by Robert Matheson
Oil 18 x 24

Studio painting form an idea taken from a field painting. I wanted a soft morning feel, quiet and serene maybe a bird starting to sing but otherwise just the feel of stillness.

Biography
I spent my  childhood traveling back and forth between the city and my uncle's farm in western Minnesota. Spending so much time in the country helped to instill a great love of nature and an appreciation for the beauty and peacefulness of rural areas. Being adopted I struggled to find a way to fit in,Playing sports, scouts etc. but it was art that always called to me. I much preferred drawing to homework!  I was a poor student, I think I was just bored.  After the service I attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design part time for a year on the G.I. Bill.    I began to wood-carve in the early 80's carving birds and fish .       As luck would have it, my neighbor was Brian Stewart- a member of Plein Aire  Painters Of America . Brian not only gave me a demonstration but also urged me to give it a try. This was a life changing event!  I have been painting Plein Aire ever since. I  have attended a few workshops  with Brian Stewart and with Stapleton Kearns. I have spent countless hours painting from life year round and have developed my own style. I paint on a regular basis with noted painter Bob Bonawitz and others who have helped me become a better painter. I am convinced that in time the landscape will change so my motto is "Preserving the landscape one canvas at a time" I participate in gallery shows in the area on a regular basis.  My work is collected nationally and I am well known for my winter paintings.  I feel like I was born to paint the landscape and I hope you can see it in my work.   I reside in Southwest Minneapolis with my wife Nancy and four dogs. My other passion is [...]
