BORN BARBADOS, W.I.
Rodney, as he is affectionately known, has a great love for painting with a special emphasis on cartooning and continues to develop his artistic career amidst a hectic arts administrative schedule. He is currently employed at the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) and has been for the past twenty-one years; initially as a Gallery Attendant and worked his way up to his current post of Cultural Officer of Visual Arts and Curator. His primary duties include responsibility for the implementation of developmental programming in the visual arts in Barbados, the coordination of the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) as well as the Crop Over National Art Exhibitions. Additionally, he performs a facilitation role within the Cultural Developmental Department of the NCF and for the past four years has developed a local series of outdoor painting workshops dubbed “En Plein Air”, which has reaped tremendous success and continues to grow.
As current Treasurer of the Executive Committee and Past Vice President, Assistant Secretary and Secretary of the National Committee of the International Council of Museums-Barbados (ICOM-a museum and heritage organization which represents the interests of museums worldwide), he has honed the necessary skills and exposure required to effectively execute his role as Curator with the NCF.
As an Assistant Interior Decorator at the former DaCosta Mannings in their design and display department, he was responsible for this department copping first prize, in a Baygon Gondola design competition in 1997. He also contributed to the Barbados Advocate’s “Hype Magazine” and “The Investigator” during the mid 1990’s with numerous comic strips, and in particular the comic strip entitled “Buddies”.
