Sandra Murphy is a realist oil painter living in the Toronto area. Although always interested in art, it wasn't until mid-life that she took her first art class. She had seen an ad for classes at the Art Gallery of Ontario, mentioned it in passing to her son and promptly forgot about it. That Christmas, Murphy's two children presented her with a gift certificate for a beginners' watercolour class at the AGO. That gift changed Murphy's life forever.
Murphy is now a graduate of the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto, one of the few ateliers in Canada teaching the classic techniques of the Old Masters, and happily pursues her art full time.
Murphy paints mostly still lifes, although she does occasionally do figurative work or a portrait from life. Her still life paintings feature antique or vintage items, children's toys, old tools, common household items, wine or fresh flowers; whatever captures her eye and imagination. She likes things with a history, that are worn, rusty, well used or obviously much loved, such as children's toys. Viewers have said they find her paintings peaceful or soothing. Some have sparked in the viewer a fond recollection of things they or someone in their family used to have.
Drawn to the beauty of fresh flowers, Murphy has recently embarked on a series of floral paintings. The challenge is to capture the essence of the flowers and their fleeting beauty before they change, wilt or die. This elusive goal keeps Murphy coming back to try again and again to get it right.
Working from life, never photography, Murphy arranges her flowers and any other objects to be included in the painting on a stand beside her easel.
