"More than anything, I try to create a mood that is found in the early morning and late afternoon through the use of tone and color. My paintings exhibit natures lighting conditions."
Don Freymuth was born in Wurtzburg, Germany. His artistic creativity was first encouraged by his grandfather, William Freymuth, a successful printmaker from Bremen, Germany. Don moved with his parents to San Diego in 1964. In 1974 Don received his BA in Fine Arts from the University of California, Irvine. He received his MA in Education in 1987 from Sonoma State. After spending two years in Spain and Italy, Don set up residence in the San Francisco Bay area where he studied portraiture and French academic painting under the well known artist,Henry Leighton.
After a successful decade of study and exhibition, Don returned to the San Diego area. He now resides in the Carmel Valley and and teaches in Imperial Beach. Don spends four hours a day painting in his studio and in the outdoor light of San Diego. Don's work is in several galleries. He has had several two and three-man shows at the Grand Oak Gallery in Oakland, California, as well as a number of portrait commissions. Don works in a style of well known early California Impressionists, and like his painterly forefathers, Don's work reflects a concern for light coupled with a strong color balance like many of the early colorists.
Don Freymuth is currently studying with Ron Lemen at Studio 2nd Street.
